WoodWing Assets: Digital Asset Management for Publishers, Brands and Media Production
Assets 6, Assets 10 and Studio at a glance
Publishers, brand production teams and agencies handle image files, videos, layouts and documents in volumes that folder structures can no longer organise sensibly. A digital asset management system brings this content into one place, makes it searchable through metadata, and opens it up to automated workflows.
WoodWing has been building these solutions for over 20 years. We have been implementing WoodWing Assets for around 13 years, starting back when the product was sold by Dutchsoftware under the name Elvis DAM.
WoodWing Assets as a DAM platform
WoodWing Assets is a digital asset management system for teams that produce and reuse large volumes of digital files. Images, videos, InDesign layouts, PDFs and Office documents live in one system, complete with metadata, rights information and version history.
The practical value comes from search. Many files already carry metadata, such as IPTC, EXIF or XMP fields written by cameras, image editors or layout applications. Assets reads this information on import and makes it searchable, with no manual re-entry. Add your own fields and taxonomies, and teams find content in seconds rather than minutes. On top of that comes collaboration across departments, with controlled access for external partners, agencies and print service providers.
Assets is built to connect. Its REST API integrates editorial systems, shops, PIM systems and production lines. That is where our focus lies.
WoodWing Assets 6: on-premise and under your control
Assets 6 is the server line, with full control over your data and your operations. Install it on-premise in your own data centre, or in a cloud environment of your choice such as AWS, with data residency in the EU or Switzerland.
What sets Assets 6 apart:
- GDPR-compliant operation with a verifiable storage location for your files
- Audit trail covering all access and changes, which matters in regulated sectors like banking and insurance
- Custom scripts running inside the system, for checks, automation and special logic no standard product ships with
- Adobe InDesign and Creative Cloud integration for editorial production
- Scale to tens of millions of assets and hundreds of concurrent users
For organisations with their own compliance requirements, an established system landscape or a high degree of automation, Assets 6 remains the solid choice.
WoodWing Assets 10: cloud-native DAM, formerly Swivle
Assets 10 is WoodWing’s cloud-native solution, known as Swivle until 2025. It is built around a fast start and a modern interface.
What Assets 10 brings:
- AI-assisted auto-tagging for automatic keywording
- Photo and video editing directly in the browser, with no switch to another application
- Multi-brand portals with custom branding and separate access rights
- Reworked metadata handling and search
Assets 10 is the younger line and is being expanded continuously. Some capabilities familiar from Assets 6 are still in development for Assets 10. On the operational side: Assets 10 is SaaS, there is no on-premise installation, and server-side custom scripts as known from Assets 6 are not part of the model. If you need those, Assets 6 is your answer. If you do not, Assets 10 gives you the faster start.
Assets 6 or Assets 10: two lines, not a version sequence
The version numbers suggest a sequence that does not exist. Assets 6 comes from the Elvis line, Assets 10 is the evolved Swivle. These are two product lines with different origins and different profiles. Assets 6 is not the old version of Assets 10, and moving between them is a migration, not an update.
| Criterion | Assets 6 | Assets 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | on-premise, own cloud, EU/CH | SaaS, multi-tenant |
| Data control | entirely yours | with the vendor |
| Custom scripts | yes, server-side | no |
| Audit trail | yes | scope differs |
| Entry | project with setup | fast, self-service |
In short: Assets 10 suits teams that want to start quickly and have no special requirements around operations or data residency. Assets 6 suits you when data sovereignty, automation and depth of integration are what count.
We advise on the outcome, not on our licence business. And if you do want to move from Assets 6 to Assets 10, we handle the migration including metadata mapping.
WoodWing Studio
WoodWing Studio is the editorial system for multichannel publishing. Editorial teams plan issues, manage articles and layouts, work in parallel inside Adobe InDesign, and publish across print, web and digital channels from a single system. Combined with Assets, editorial content and image data sit in one continuous chain.
Studio projects are delivered together with our partner network. The Assets side we handle ourselves.
Integration: Adobe, Enfocus Switch and n8n
A DAM only pays off once it is integrated rather than standing on its own.
- Adobe InDesign and Creative Cloud: direct access to Assets from inside the layout
- Enfocus Switch: our configurator, in use worldwide and available in the Enfocus AppStore, turns Assets into a production cockpit for automated processing
- n8n: our WoodWing Assets Node for n8n connects Assets Server 6 without HTTP request boilerplate. Nine operations, from Login and Search through to Download as ZIP
- REST API: for everything else we plan the right API calls with you and tune existing ones for speed and resource use
If you are coming from WoodWing Smart Mover: vendor support ended in March 2026. We have described the migration options in detail and show in a separate piece how n8n can take over the role.
Custom scripts and tools for WoodWing Assets
Beyond the n8n node we have built several in-house developments for Assets: Forensic for backend audit trails, ConfigCharm for user group management, MissingMaintenance for maintenance window control, AltTextCreator and SpeechToText for accessible metadata, and the Assets ProofListener for audio reviews and audiobook proof listening directly inside the DAM.

What does WoodWing Assets cost
WoodWing Assets is licensed by user count, feature scope and operating model. Assets 6 works out differently from Assets 10, because server licence, hosting and maintenance are separate line items. Depending on the project, setup, migration and training come on top.
A reliable figure only emerges once user count, data volume and integration requirements are on the table. Talk to us, a short conversation is enough for a first assessment.
Our experience for you
We are a WoodWing Gold Partner and an official Integration and Solution Partner. In that role we also support other WoodWing partners with complex configurations and integrations.
Every project starts with the question of correct sizing. How many assets will accumulate, how many users work concurrently, how many API calls the connected systems generate. From those three figures we derive hardware, storage and architecture, instead of over-provisioning on a hunch or retrofitting after the first bottleneck.
A DAM keeps growing. That is why we run regular reviews: whether the sizing still matches actual usage, whether security updates and certificates are current, whether backup and restore actually work, and where performance headroom has been used up. Bottlenecks surface before they disrupt day-to-day production.
What we take on:
- Selecting the right DAM system, advised on the outcome
- Implementation, configuration and operational support
- Sizing based on asset volume, user count and API load, before procurement rather than after the first bottleneck
- Regular reviews covering sizing, security, updates and backup strategy
- Metadata strategy and taxonomies
- Migration from existing systems, including Assets 6 to Assets 10
- Custom development for requirements the standard does not cover
- Technical support with short paths, in English or German, from someone who knows your installation
- Training for your team
Our customers come from publishing, print production, brand production, and from banks and insurance companies with corporate design standards. DACH focus, customers worldwide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between WoodWing Assets 6 and Assets 10?
Two product lines, not a version sequence. Assets 6 comes from the Elvis line and runs on-premise or in your own cloud, with server-side custom scripts and an audit trail. Assets 10 is the evolved Swivle, cloud-native and multi-tenant, with AI tagging and in-browser editing, but without an on-premise option.
Can I run WoodWing Assets on-premise?
Yes, with Assets 6. On-premise in your own data centre or in a cloud environment of your choice, with data residency in the EU or Switzerland. Assets 10 is SaaS only.
Is WoodWing Assets GDPR-compliant?
With Assets 6 you control storage location, access rights and retention yourself, which enables GDPR-compliant operation. The audit trail documents access and changes.
What happened to WoodWing Swivle?
Swivle has been called WoodWing Assets 10 since 2025, with a significantly expanded feature set and a reworked interface.
How does WoodWing Assets integrate with existing systems?
Through the REST API, through our configurator for Enfocus Switch, through our n8n node and through Adobe InDesign. For special cases we develop custom scripts inside the system.
How large does the server for WoodWing Assets need to be?
It comes down to three figures: number of assets, number of concurrent users, and the volume of API access from connected systems. Those determine storage requirements, CPU and memory sizing, and whether separate processing servers make sense. We do this sizing before procurement and revisit it in regular reviews, because asset volume and API load grow over the years.
How many assets can WoodWing Assets handle?
We support installations with tens of millions of assets and hundreds of concurrent users.
What does WoodWing Assets cost?
Licensing depends on user count, feature scope and operating model. For a reliable figure we need user count, data volume and integration requirements.
Do you carry out migrations from Assets 6 to Assets 10?
Yes. We migrate from Assets 6 to Assets 10 including metadata mapping, and from other DAM systems into WoodWing Assets. Training your team on the new environment is part of the migration.
