Extensis is now Monotype Connect

What changes for existing customers. And what doesn’t.

If you still run Extensis Universal Type Server (UTS) in production, you have been operating a server without security patches for some time now. Development was halted in 2023, and as of early 2026 critical security updates have stopped, while the auto-activation plug-ins for Adobe Creative Cloud are no longer being maintained. Concrete consequence: no plug-ins for CC 2026, while Monotype Connect is officially CC-2026-compatible and auto-activation continues to work there.

Additionally relevant: Monotype has announced that the internal migration team will support Universal Type Server only until September 2026. Anyone planning to move to Monotype Connect and wanting to use tool-supported migration of UTS holdings should schedule the project before then.

In parallel, Extensis was acquired by Monotype. Monotype Connect is the new brand for the former Extensis Connect. The acquisition was announced in November 2024, the brand migration was completed with App version 28 in spring 2026. Connect Fonts and Suitcase Fusion are gone, Connect+Insight has been merged into Monotype Connect.

What does this mean for existing customers, and what migration paths are realistic?

Key facts at a glance

  • November 2024: Monotype announces the acquisition of Extensis
  • March 2026: Extensis Portfolio (DAM) sold to Axle AI, continues as Portfolio DAM, LLC
  • Spring 2026: Brand migration to Monotype Connect with App version 28
  • September 2026: Monotype-internal migration team for UTS ends, after that only manual customer-side migration
  • “Extensis Connect” and “Connect+Insight” are now both Monotype Connect (tier consolidated)
  • “Extensis Connect Fonts” no longer exists
  • “Suitcase Fusion” no longer exists
  • “Universal Type Server”: no further development since 2023, no security updates and no Adobe CC plug-in updates since early 2026

Tier structure at Monotype

According to Monotype’s communication as of May 2026, three tiers are available:

Tier Price (EUR, reseller terms) Target audience Sales channel
Monotype Connect EUR 185/user/year SMEs, startups, in-house studios. Available from 1 license. Includes the functionality of the former Connect+Insight tier. via resellers like 3f8h.net / electronic publishing
Monotype Connect for Agencies EUR 275/user/year Creative agencies, multi-brand workflows. With brand auditing, campaign management, built-in quoting tool, and realtime licensing connection from brands. via resellers like 3f8h.net / electronic publishing
Monotype Connect Pro on request Enterprise, global brands. With web fonts & CSS kits, realtime licensing connection to agencies, enterprise compliance scanning, global language support (550+). direct sales by Monotype only

List prices on monotype.com are quoted in US dollars (USD 200, USD 300). The EUR prices listed above are the reseller terms applicable to the European market.

What font chaos really costs

In its Scaling Creative Operations Report 2025, Monotype quantified what unstructured font management costs organizations. The numbers are a useful reality check before deciding on renewal or migration options:

  • 41% of creatives spend 26 to 40% of their working time on non-creative tasks
  • 42% struggle with version inconsistencies, which delays production
  • 68% are challenged by licensing complexity
  • 30+ hours are lost per creative per year due to manual font issues
  • up to USD 1.5 million in annual operational losses for a 100-person creative team
  • USD 2,000 to 8,000 per location per year is what agencies typically spend on desktop fonts alone (without structured license management)

These figures are not the question of whether you should migrate to Monotype Connect or to FontAgent Server. They are the question of why structured font management deserves an investment decision in the first place. Renewal dates today are more than a pricing conversation, they are an architecture discussion.

Frequently asked questions

1. When did Extensis Connect become Monotype Connect?

With App version 28, rolled out in spring 2026. Pure visual rebrand, no functional changes. Workflows, plug-ins, and auto-activation remain identical. The acquisition itself was announced on November 18, 2024.

2. Are my Extensis Connect licenses still valid?

Technically yes, fully. Logins, accounts, and software access remain unchanged. On pricing, however, you should expect Monotype to adjust tier conditions and subscription models. Concrete impact typically becomes visible at the renewal date. We recommend reviewing the options together with us 90 to 180 days before your renewal.

3. What happened to Connect+Insight?

The standalone tier no longer exists. The functionality (Project Risk Scanning, License Compliance, License Management) is now integrated into Monotype Connect. Existing customers transition automatically, without feature loss during the rebrand.

4. What about Extensis Connect Fonts?

Connect Fonts no longer exists. If you used it, you need an active migration plan. Realistic options: Monotype Connect (Cloud) or Insider FontAgent Server (on-prem).

5. Universal Type Server: what happens next?

UTS receives no further development. As of early 2026, critical security updates have also stopped, and the auto-activation plug-ins for Adobe Creative Cloud are no longer being maintained. Anyone running UTS in production currently has no plug-in for CC 2026 and is operating a server without patches. Both are relevant risks, especially in environments with compliance requirements or external audits.

Additionally relevant: Monotype has announced that its in-house team supporting UTS migrations will be discontinued in September 2026. Until then, tool-supported migrations via Monotype are still possible; after that, transferring UTS holdings to the new setup happens manually on the customer side or through third parties like us. Migration should be planned without delay.

6. I still use Suitcase Fusion. What now?

Suitcase Fusion no longer exists as a product. Existing installations continue to run, but receive no updates and no adjustments for new operating systems or Adobe versions.

Migration paths differ by setup:

For single workstations: Monotype Connect is available from 1 license and is the direct successor for former Suitcase Fusion single-seat users, with cloud convenience and Adobe auto-activation. Alternatively, Insider FontAgent Server for on-prem setups or smaller teams.

If you are looking for a small, license-free solution, standalone font managers are also viable alternatives:

  • FontBase (Windows, macOS, Linux): modern interface, professional features, free in the base version
  • TypeFace (macOS): minimalist, full focus on font preview
  • FontExpert (Windows): established, comprehensive management and preview features

More tools on request. We only recommend what we have evaluated ourselves.

We are happy to support the migration, regardless of which solution fits in the end: review your font inventory, structure it sensibly, consolidate license data, transfer everything into the new solution.

For team setups: Monotype Connect (Cloud) or Insider FontAgent Server (on-prem).

7. Does anything change in my Adobe Creative Cloud workflow?

For active Monotype Connect installations, no. Auto-activation, plug-ins, and Font Sense work as before, and Monotype Connect is officially compatible with Adobe Creative Cloud 2026. The update brings only a more modern UI, no workflow disruption.

For UTS installations, yes, because Adobe CC plug-ins are no longer maintained there. For CC 2026 they are already unavailable. Migration becomes mandatory at the next Adobe major release at the latest.

8. What’s the difference between Monotype Connect, Connect Pro, and Connect for Agencies?

Monotype Connect is the entry tier for SMEs, startups, and in-house studios. Includes centralized font management, license visibility & compliance, Adobe auto-activation (including CC 2026), and project risk scanning. Functionally equivalent to the former Connect+Insight. List price: EUR 185/user/year (reseller terms).

New in the platform (as of May 2026):

  • Smart Search: saved font searches across multiple criteria (style, classification, foundry, metadata) that update automatically as new matching fonts are added to the library
  • Glyph Viewer: complete character set of a font at a glance, including Unicode values, for quick language and symbol checks before font selection
  • Google SSO: in addition to Azure and Okta, Google Workspace is now also available as a single-sign-on provider
  • Isolated Font Libraries: team-separated library views that show only the fonts relevant to each team, while brands retain central governance control

Monotype Connect for Agencies is built for multi-client workflows. List price: EUR 275/user/year (reseller terms). In addition to Connect, it includes:

  • Access to 250,000+ Monotype fonts (for prototyping without separate licensing, license only when moving into production)
  • Brand auditing & campaign management
  • Built-in quoting tool for transparent license cost calculation toward clients, extended since spring 2026 with direct quote requests to Monotype Creative Services from within the platform (font renaming, glyph redesign, spacing adjustments, variable font creation)
  • Realtime licensing connection from brands (Brand Connector, announced by Monotype; according to current communication the rollout date is not yet final)
  • Bulk import of license data via CSV
  • Data Assist (AI-supported scanning and capture of font license terms)
  • Creative Type Services: three font modifications per year included (weights, styles, logo retouching)
  • Font renaming services for brand-specific custom names
  • Team training, library navigation support, creative sessions

Monotype Connect Pro targets enterprise and global brands. Price on request. In addition to Connect, it includes:

  • Access to 250,000+ Monotype fonts
  • Web fonts & CSS kits, hosting for web projects
  • Realtime licensing connection to agencies
  • Enterprise compliance scanning
  • Global language support (550+ languages)
  • Enterprise SSO and automated user provisioning
  • Dedicated customer success manager

9. Which tiers are available through resellers like 3f8h.net / electronic publishing?

Monotype Connect and Monotype Connect for Agencies are made available through the Monotype channel to authorized resellers like us. We can offer both tiers directly.

Monotype Connect Pro is sold exclusively direct by Monotype, because this tier involves more complex license agreements that Monotype handles internally with their own reps and legal counsel. We can support you with upfront needs analysis and introduce you to Monotype as a lead. On request, we accompany you through the direct sales process as your trusted point of contact, so that you have advisory continuity rather than switching between several contacts.

10. Are there alternatives outside the Monotype ecosystem?

Yes, and we actively recommend them in specific situations. Insider FontAgent Server is the established on-prem solution with an architecture model similar to the former Universal Type Server. A direct fit for teams with:

  • strategic vendor diversification
  • regulatory on-prem requirements or data protection constraints
  • preference for a centralized font server architecture without cloud dependency
  • focus on price stability at renewals

11. What happened to Extensis Portfolio?

In March 2026, Extensis Portfolio, the digital asset management component, was sold to Axle AI. The product continues under its own brand as Portfolio DAM, LLC (an Axle AI division). Existing contracts are fulfilled by the Portfolio team; license and pricing models are announced as unchanged. Strategically, Monotype and Extensis now focus entirely on font management. We continue to support active Portfolio installations and assist with update and maintenance questions on request.

12. What happens to my MyFonts licenses?

MyFonts continues to operate separately as part of the Monotype family. Your fonts and individual licenses purchased there are unaffected by the Connect rebrand.

13. How does 3f8h.net / electronic publishing support this decision?

We are an active Monotype reseller for Monotype Connect and Monotype Connect for Agencies. At the same time, we are a certified Insider reseller for FontAgent Server. This means we have no structural preference for one solution over the other.

We analyze your workflow, team size, compliance requirements, and IT strategy, then recommend the path with the cleanest fit.

An official comparison table for the remaining legacy products (UTS, Suitcase Fusion) versus Monotype Connect is still in development according to Monotype. We will add it here as soon as it becomes available.

Nearly two decades of font management. Both worlds in one hand.

3f8h.net / electronic publishing has worked as Extensis Platinum Partner and the only “Platinum Commercial & Implementation Specialist for Extensis in Europe” for many years on Connect, Suitcase, and UTS installations in publishing houses, agencies, and brand organizations. With the Monotype acquisition, we remain active in selling Monotype Connect and Monotype Connect for Agencies. At the same time, we are a certified Insider reseller for FontAgent Server.

This dual role is deliberate. It allows us to recommend whichever solution fits, rather than pushing one over the other. Understand the workflow, take compliance constraints seriously, respect IT strategy, then recommend the path with the cleanest fit.
